John S. Lien, well known resident of this city, died Sunday, June 15, at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 71 years. He had been in failing health for several months.
Mr. Lien was born in Norway on August 26, 1864, and grew to boyhood there. At the age of 15 years he came to this country with his parents (Syver Syversen Lien and Ingeborg Frederiksdatter Lien) and settled on a farm in Grant County, Minnesota. He was married at Elbow Lake on April 13, 1888 to Maria Hanson, and after almost half of a century of happy married life, she preceded him in death about a year ago.
To this union nine children were born: Minnie (Mrs. E. J. Sethney), Frances (Mrs. A. Splettstoser) and John Jr., all of whom live in Kalispell, Montana; Esther (Mrs. Ernest Murphy) of Ashland, Nebraska; James, Kansas City; Olga (Mrs. Helmer Olson), Hoffman; Alice (Mrs. John H. Flolid) Little Falls; Orrin, Richland, Virginia; Earl, who lives in Alexandria.
John S. Lien leaves two brothers: Fred, who lives in Tacoma, Washington, and Alous of Barrett Minnesota, and two sisters: Mrs. Ida (Ivan) Palm, and Mrs. Elmer Olson, both of Minneapolis. There are 19 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Mr. Lien was engaged in farming most of his life, in Grant County (MN) (near Elk Lake) and then for a number of years in Fillmore County (MN), finally locating in Douglas County 27 years ago on the Baumbach farm west of town. Six years ago he retired from farming and moved to Alexandria, taking a position with the Lake Region and later with the Kraker Chevrolet companies.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 with the Engstrom Funeral home and at 2:00 at the Methodist church; Rev. W. G. Mikkelson officiating and the Odd Fellow Lodge having charge of the services. A quartet composed of Mrs. H. Brown, Mrs. Neva McArdell, O. L. Solstad and Albert Allen with Milford Johnson as accompanist, sang: "Safe in the Arms of Jesus", One Sweetly Solemn Thought", "Sweet Hour of Prayer", and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee".
