Samuel Clogston

Samuel Clogston was born near Maratte, Ohio, September 9, 1829. He came to Cherry Valley, Illinois, and on October 29, 1856, was married to Sarah J. Keith. This couple came to Salt Springs, near what is called Fall River City in the fall of 1870 and homesteaded their home here in the spring of 1871, in what is now Liberty township, Elk county, Kansas. Here they lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on October 29, 1906. To this union were born six children, Frank L. Clogston, now living at Buckley, Washington, Charles A. Clogston, now living near Severy, Kansas, Will Clogston, who died Dec. 11, 1911, Rosa Clogston who died at the age of three years, Fanny Kimball now living near Holly, Colorado, and Fred W. Clogston, now living at Holly, Colo., just over the line in Hamilton county, Kansas.

Uncle Samuel was the last of a family of eight sisters and six brothers, he dying Sunday April 27, 1919, at the home of his son Charles Clogston near Severy, Kansas. He had twenty-five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. One son served in the Spanish American War, six grandsons and one great grandson serving our country in the present World War.

Uncle Sammy Clogston was a man who was liked by all and was a great student and reader, kind and affectionate and always ready to do his part in any act that would help a neighbor or his community, and his presence a familiar one at all public gatherings, and always attended good lectures and was a lover of the Chautauquas. He will not only be missed in the home but in the community at large.

Funeral services were held at the Charles Clogston home yesterday at 11 o'clock conducted by Rev. Ditto of Fall River and assisted by the deceased nephew, Lew E. Clogston of Eureka. Interment was in Twin Groves cemetery.
