JOSEPH P. MASSEY, SR. May 9, 1924 - March 2, 2004 A native of Thomasville, Georgia, Mr. Massey was the son of the late Joseph McIntyre Massey and Nola Lee Persall Massey. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Champion Massey, a daughter, Harriette Lee Massey, and a sister, Mae Pearl Massey.

He was a graduate of Thomasville High School who went on to aid his country's call in World War II. He served in the U. S. Army from 1941 to 1944. As part of the Normandy Invasion he landed on Omaha Beach with the Third Army. He graduated from Mercer University in 1948 before beginning a thirty year career with the Dekalb County schools where he served as a teacher, coach, and principal. He retired as principal from Cary Reynolds Elementary School. He was active in the North Dekalb Lions Club. Also, he was an active member, Sunday School teacher, and Deacon at First Baptist Church in Doraville. He worked with the Chamblee-Doraville International Ministry helping refugee families from Cambodia. He was a life-long fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Celeste Champion Massey; a sister, Sarah Annie Massey Floyd; a daughter and son-in-law, Windi Massey Dees and Richard Bradley Dees; grandchildren, Brian and Cameron Dees; son and daughter-law, Maxwell Kemp Massey and Veronica Diaz Massey; son, James Marshall Massey; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph P. Massey, Jr. and Debbie McCoy Massey; daughter-in-law, Viki Massey Lockett; grandson, Zachary Christian Massey and granddaughter-in-law, Rachael Hitchcock Massey; great-grandchildren, James Preston Massey and Jonah Champion Massey.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the First Baptist Church of Doraville, 5935 New Peachtree Road, Doraville, GA 30340 or to the Atlanta Intercultural Ministries, P. O. Box 80249, Atlanta, GA 30366.

Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock on Saturday, March 6th, at First Baptist Church of Doraville with the Revs. Lanny Reich and Sam Letson officiating. Interment, North Atlanta Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 o'clock on Friday evening at H. M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, (404) 261-3510.
