Pat Mallette was born on September 25, 1032 in rural Dodge County to Edward and Cora (Fredricksen) Mallette.

He played basketball and American Legion baseball during high school. He earned All-State in basketball at Uehling High School in 1949 and also in 1950. During his four years at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he played semi-pro baseball for Columbus, Nebraska, and also played baseball for UNL in 1952, 1953,1954, lettering all 3 years. He was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was in the Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) all 4 years of college. He graduated from UNL in 1954, with a Bachelor of Science Teachers' College degree.

On August 9, 1953, he was united in marriage to Helen Rasmussen at First Methodist Church in Blair.

In 1954, Pat entered the Air Force as a Lieutenant, and served from 1954-1-56 in San Angelo, Texas.

He played professional baseball with the Baltimore Oriole's Farm System in 1957.

In 1958, Pat began his teaching career in the Blair, Nebraska High School. He started as an Industrial Arts instructor, and later served as Vocational Director, as well as assistant basketball coach, until retiring in 1980.

In 1980, Pat and his wife Helen became co-owners of the Driftwood Inn near Blair, and managed that for 15 years. Also in 1980, he started Pat Mallette Construction and Pat Mallette Real Estate.

From 1969 to 1994, he worked as an official in The Big 8 and Missouri Valley Conferences for 15 years, and as an official in the National Football League (NFL) for 26 years. He refereed Super Bowl XXI football in 1987.

Pat was elected to the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame and The Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Pat enjoyed hunting and fishing all of his life, and did some commercial hunting and fishing. He enjoyed ballroom dancing and an occasional round of golf.

He retired from everything in 1995, but kept his true highlights in his life: his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. as well as his love of the outdoors and sports, and belief in hard work.

Pat Mallette entered eternity January 29, 2015, in Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents in 1987, and daughter Crystal in 2000.

Left with memories are his wife, Helen, of Blair; daughter Lori (Merle) Hansen of Blair; son Patrick (Janet) Mallette of Blair; sisters: Betty (Ed) Vackiner of Ewing, NE, and Donna (Laverne) Lampbrecht of Fremont, NE; 7 grandchildren: Mandy (Michael) Giles, Haley(Christian) Jacobsen, Katy (Jacob) VanNoy, Melissa (Brian) Rushing, Becky (Andy) Max, P.J. Mallette and Michael Mallette, 9 great-grandchildren: Cora, Ellis, Oliver, Clara, Jackson, Josie, Calina, Hope and Chase.

Funeral Services will be 2 pm Tuesday, Feb. 3, at First United Methodist Church in Blair, NE. Pastor Russell Foust will conduct the service and offer words of comfort. Sheri Matzen will be pianist, and JoEll Matzen soloist, singing "Wind Beneath My Wings", "How Great Thou Art", and Special Music Selection "My Dear".

Pallbrearers are Michael and Mandy Giles, Jacob and Katy VanNoy, Christian and Haley Jacobson, Brian and Melissa Rushing, Andy and Becky Max, P.J. Mallette, Michael Mallette.

Graveside services will be held at Blair Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Blair Family YMCA, First United Methodist Church or the Blair Basketball Club.

Long-time shop teacher in the Blair Community Schools, Pat Mallete, passed away yesterday morning -- also officiated in the NFL for many years, established a real estate firm, involved in other areas -- RIP, Pat (from fellow-teacher, Chuck Jorgensen)

Pat was a longtime friend from my earliest days of teaching in Blair. That smile and positive attitude will definitely be missed.--Phyllis Uchtman
