George Mercer Dawson
Birth: Aug. 1, 1849
Nova Scotia, Canada
Death: Mar. 2, 1901, Canada

Scientist, Ethnographer and Surveyor. He is considered one of Canada's greatest scientists. At age 12, he was inflicted with tuberculosis of the spine. He studied geology and palentology and graduated the highest in his class from Queens University in 1890 with an LL.D,a doctorate level academic law degree. He surveyed the international boundry of western Canada from 1872 to 1876. Beginning in 1883, he was working for the Canadian government to map out the Canadian Rockies. This reulted in him discovering some unknown peaks and by 1886, his research and map of the rockies was published. He led an expedition in 1887 to the Yukon region and he drew the first maps of this area. By 1895, he was the director of the geological survey of Canada. Dawson City is a town in the Yukon Territory which is named after him. Dawson Creek in Bitish Columbia is also named in his honor. (bio by: Tom Denardo)
