DALLASTOWN Ruth Arlene (Markey) Brant, 87, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 27, 2015, after a lengthy illness at Dallastown Nursing Center. She was the loving, caring and dedicated wife of John S. Brant, Jr., to whom she was married for over 67 years. The Celebration of Life service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 30, 2015 at Codorus Church of the Brethren, 1129 Dunkard Valley Road, Dallastown, PA, with Senior Pastor Richard J. Fischl officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:15 to 11 a.m. A private burial will precede the service in the adjoining church cemetery. Arrangements are by Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion. Ruth was born July 29, 1927, and was raised on her family farm along Powder Mill Road in York Township. She was the daughter of the late Elmer Jacob and Henrietta Louise Marie (Schaefer) Markey. She graduated from William Penn High School in 1945 and attended Millersville University. Ruth married John on August 9, 1947, and started their own family farm near Dallastown. She was employed at York Hospital for 31.5 years prior to her retirement in 1998, in the Dietary Department. She loved working on their 38-acre farm and raised a variety of vegetables along with fruit trees and other livestock. She was also known for 55 years as the "parsley lady" in her local area. They sold their locally-grown vegetables at a stand in Central Market and truck peddled throughout York City and Dallastown, as well as supplying to local nearby grocery stores. She was very active in her church, serving as a Deacon with her husband and numerous other roles. She instilled a strong work ethic in her six children and worked extremely hard throughout her entire life. In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children, Jane Gordon of York, Steve Brant and wife, Pam of Seven Valleys, Tom Brant and wife, Ruth Ann of Dallastown, Nancy Orwick and husband, Donald of Dallastown, Jack Brant and wife, Barbara of Dallastown and Jeff Brant and wife, Joanne of Dallastown; and was the loving grandmother of Peggy Smith, Jessica Brant, John Brant IV, Carla Kulb, Laurie Schwartz, Clifton Orwick, Nicole Brant, Danielle Brant and Cole Brant. She also has four great-grandchildren, Kayla Smith, Kasey Smith, Joie Brant, Gracie Kulb; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
