Graduated from Whittier College and Duke University Law School. Returned to California, practiced law, and married Thelma "Pat" Ryan whom he met when he tried out for a role in a local play. Served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Elected to Congress from Southern California in 1946 and 1948. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1950. Elected U.S. Vice President with Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 and reelected in 1956. Defeated by John F. Kennedy for President in 1960, and by Governor Edmund 'Pat' Brown for Governor of California in 1962. Spent 6 years practicing law in New York City, returned to politics and defeated then Vice President Hubert Humphrey for President in 1968. First U.S. President to visit China. Overwhelmingly reelected in 1972 but forced to resign as a result of the Watergate scandal in August, 1974. Spent the remaining 20 years of his life rebuilding his reputation as a world statesman and adviser on foreign affairs to his presidential successors.
