Henry Scott Houghton, was born in Fitchburg Mass, Aug 30, 1849, died Dec 2, 1901, aged 52y 3m and 2d. He was one of a family of 5 children. After his mother's death, he, together with his youngest sister, Mrs. H. F. Oehler, came to Ohio when he was but 2 years of age, and was cared by his uncle, Curtis Houghton, and has been a life long resident of Dalton, until his death.
When 14 years of age he was drafted into the service of the Civil War, being a member of Company E, 169th, O.N.G. He served his country for a time, and received an honorable discharge, Dec 16, 1864. While in the service he sustained an injury which caused him to be a sufferer through the greater part of life. The past 12 years, he has been confined to his home, unable to read, or walk and enjoy life as he would liked to have done. His sufferings were great but he bore them patiently, often saying that sometime they would be over and today we feel that he enjoys far better things than do we, who are left to mourn his death, only to pass through this dark vale, and meet loved ones gone before.
Oct 17, 1872, he was married to Susanna Emig. To this union were born 5 children, one of which has preceded him to the spirit world. He leaves a wife, 4 children, 2 sisters, a brother and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his death.
