Hope spent part of June and July 1901 in Atlanta, Logan County, Illinois, coming home in time for the county fair. She became sick and grew rapidly worse. There were numerous dark, bruise-like patches on her body, but when she died, August 11, 1901, the doctor said it was cerebral-spinal meningitis.
