COL. WELDY DEAD.

Prominent Galena Editor Once Drove
Stage From Fort Scott to Galena.

Colonel L. C. Weldy, prominent in Kansas politics, and deputy oil inspector for the state, died Sunday night at his home in Galena, says the Fort Scott Republican. Few men in this part of the country are better known than Colonel Weldy. There never was a political contest in the state that he was not identified in on one side or the other. Until his death he was an active worker for Bailey and it devolved partially upon the colonel to deliver Cherokee county to Bailey.

When S. O. Spencer of this city was appointed oil inspector of the state Colonel Weldy was a candidate. He lost out but he was made a deputy and he has held that position ever since. The following telegram from his home tells of his death:
Colonel L. C. Weldy, deputy coal oil inspector, died at his home, 1100 South Elm street last night of a complication of diseases. He was a firm believer in Christian Science and was treated by Heeler Reed of Joplin during his last illness. Colonel Weldy was a pioneer of Kansas, coming to Baxter Springs in the '60s. He conducted a stage line from Baxter to Fort Scott.

When lead was found in the bed of Short creek in 1880, he was one of the ?re men on the ground. The Galena Republican, of which he was editor and manager for the past twenty-four years, was first edited by him in that year. As a newspaper man he was widely known and universally popular.

He was an old soldier, having enlisted from Ohio when a mere boy. For the past twenty-two years, with the exception of one year, he has been commander of the interstate reunion held at Baxter Springs annually.

Colonel Weldy has been a staunch and loyal Republican and has held numerous minor offices with trust, and honor to the party, and has received the appointment of deputy coal oil inspector under both the Stanley and Bailey administrations. He has done as much as any man toward the up-building of Galena through the columns of his paper. His original motto of "Great Is Galena' has been widely quoted.

Colonel Weldy was a genial, kindly, benevolent man. He was Galena's first postmaster and was everybody's friend. He leaves a wife, one grown son, also a brother, Byron B. Weldy, of Dayton, Ohio, who will arrive in time to attend the funeral tomorrow afternoon.
