Gertrude M. (Baile) Barnes

After several years of declining health, Gertrude M. Barnes, age 80, died early the morning of January 22 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD. She was the daughter of the late Nathan J. Baile and Hjalmar E. Roelke, stepdaughter of the late Franklin L. Thomas, and sister of the late Arnold L. Thomas. She was the last person born at the Baile family home on Main Street in New Windsor, Carroll County, MD, and when very young moved with her mother to Frederick where she grew up. After graduating from Frederick High School in 1952, she worked as a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Company in Frederick and Ocean City. In 1956, she married Tilden F. Barnes, Jr., who was stationed at Ft. Devens in Massachusetts at the time. They moved to Mt. Airy in 1959.
Mrs. Barnes was an avid reader. She also enjoyed making things with her hands and baking, and sharing these talents with others. She was a long time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has served faithfully in many positions in the church organization in Frederick and Mt. Airy, and also in the Washington, DC Temple. In her later years, she also enjoyed serving with Meals-On-Wheels and making dolls and other toys for local charities.
She is survived by her loving husband and six children: T. Fletcher Barnes, III of Blue Creek, OH; Richard L. Barnes of Martinsburg, WV; Robert M. Barnes of Mt. Airy, MD; Paul N. Barnes of Silver Springs, MD; and Sarah J. Frischknecht and Harry H. Barnes, both of Amherst, NH, nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
