Long Illness Fatal To Toby Stearley

An illness of more than 10 months duration claimed the life, at 2:15 Sunday morning, of 21 year old Toby V. Stearley, son of Major and Mrs. Arthur W. Stearley, former Brazilians. The young man passed away at the U.S.A.F. Hospital, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
Toby, a victim of Hodgkins disease, had been hospitalized at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, for five months and for the past two months had been under treatment at the hospital where he died. Despite his long illness, he had maintained a cheerful outlook and in August his condition had shown sufficient improvement so that he was allowed to visit at home for a few weeks.
Toby was born March 7, 1939 in Brazil, a son of Arthur W. and Marlon Weaver Stearley. Since his father had chosen a military career, he had lived on many air bases in this country and in Europe.
Despite the fact that it was necessary for him to change schools many times, he maintained a high scholastic average and was graduated from Chicopee Falls High School in Massachusetts in 1956 at the age of 17. In the years preceding graduation, he had attended a total of 10 schools located in Indiana, New York, Texas, Kansas and Massachusetts as well as American schools in France and Germany when his father was stationed in Europe.
He was making plans to enter Purdue University when he became ill.
Surviving besides the parents, Major and Mrs. Arthur W. Stearley of Bunker Hill Air Force Base, near Peru, Ind., are two sisters, Mrs. Judith Cross, Peru, Ind., and Debra Ellen, at home, as well as a number of aunts, uncles and cousins in this city.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Miller & Sons Funeral Home. Burial was in Cottage Hill Cemetery.
