Philip Calderon
Birth: May 3, 1833
Death: Apr. 30, 1898

Artist. He began studying engineering, but became more interested in the drawing side of the profession, consequently deciding to become a painter. His first painting appeared at the academy in 1853, but he had little success until his painting, "Broken Vows" (1857), painted in the spirit of the Pre-Rapaelites was well received with the critics and public alike. This is one of the most celebrated Victorian pictures, which was engraved and reproduced by the thousand for over twenty years. He was a skilled painter of attractive young women, and had the ability to show their emotions in a way which appealed to Victorian sentiment and was regarded as chivalrous. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy until 1897. In 1864, he became an Associate Royal Academician and in 1867, he became a full Royal Academician. Most of his paintings include historical scenes and female figures subjects.  (bio by: s.canning)
