Birth: Jan. 6, 1924
Death: Sep. 6, 2004

Joe Kauffman was born, the eighth child, on Jan. 6, 1924 to Joseph F. and Agnes (Andrews) Kauffman of rural La Junta, CO. In his youth he was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite Church.

His love of candy led him to a candy counter where Thelma Hostetler was working. This beginning opened the door to a sweet life together of 59 years. They were married on Sept. 12, 1945 in her parent's home near Harper, KS.

The first five years of married life were spent farming in Colorado. During this time, Dennis Ura and Cynthia Jo were born. In 1951, the family moved to Harper, KS where they continued farming for a few years. Cleta Jean (Cookie) and Randal Dru were added to the family during this time.

In 1959, he began his career for the Co-ops in Danville, Argonia, and Nahsville communities. In 1973, he began his career in sales, first with Winpower, then with DewEze MFg., from which he semi-retired in 1993. He quit driving when his health forced him to do so.

Joe was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, four brothers, Enos, Jess, Clarence and Daniel;two sisters, Ida Miller and Alice Lewis.

Joe's memory will carry on through his wife Thelma and their children: Dennis and Debbie Kauffman, Cynthia and Tim Mill, "Cooki" Kauffman, and Randy and Kim Kauffman; grandchildren, Chad Tompkinson, Eric and Mary Tompkinson, Kyle McCann, Mick McCann, Sara McCann, Keith and Jamie Kauffman, Danielle Kauffman, Sam and J.J. Kauffman, and Mason and Bobbie Powell; great grandchildren: Lauren Tompkinson, Braeden McCann, Austin Tompkinson, Oakley Kauffman, Trenton Dnacaster, Nathan Anderson, and Teri Domnick; and a host of friends.

Family graveside services were held at 10 AM Friday, September 10, 2004 at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery east of Harper and the celebration of his life was held at 11 AM in the Pleasa Valley Mennonite Church with Pastor Robert Yates officiating. A eulogy was read by Pastor Royce Vogt.

Richard Busby sang "Morning Has Broken," at the cemetery and "How Great Thou Art" at the church. (bio by: Marlee (inactive))
