Birth: Oct. 9, 1836
Death: Aug., 1921

Basil D. HAYS, eighty four years of age, died at his home, in Carthage, Monday morning, at five o'clock. Mr. HAYS lived for almost forty years, in and around Lamar, Carl KONANTZ was to bring the body to Lamar, Monday evening, and at 10:30, Tuesday, the remains was to be interred in Lake Cemetery. It was Mr. HAYS' special request that there be no elaborate funeral ceremonies, so to meet his desires, it was arranged that there should be only a brief service at the grave.

Basil Derth HAYS was born in Dark County, Ohio, October 9, 1836. When he was a young man, he went to Indiana, and located at Indianapolis. He ran a saw mill and planing mill, for a good many years. He moved to Lamar, in 1881. He farmed for a good many years, before he moved to town. He moved from Lamar to Carthage, about five years ago.

On April 29th, 1856, the deceased was marred to Eliza J. DOYELL, at Highland, Indiana. She died in 1905. In August, 1906, he married Mrs. Sarah E. JOHNSON, who survives him. He is survived by two sons, both of this city, Mr. Albert HAYS and Mr. Chas. HAYS. They were at his bedside when he passed away.

Mr. HAYS, in 1861, joined the 43rd Indiana volunteers. He served three years, and was discharged because of physical disability. He was a member of the local Me-Cook post.

Mr. HAYS retained his consciousness up to very few minutes before his death. He was a man with a keen mind, firm convictions and a most sturdy character.
