ADULT DEPENDENT SON OF BACKENS, MELVIN A
TSGT US ARMY AIR FORCES

Scott William Backens, 50 of Rapid City, passed away Friday, April 21, 2006 at R.C. Regional Hospital.

He was born in Deadwood, SD on May 30, 1955 to Melvin and Bernice (Olson) Backens.

He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

He attended school in Rapid City, graduating from Stevens High School in 1973. He attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish and later worked for KOTA Radio for several years.

As a youth he was diagnosed as having Friedreich's Ataxia, a degenerative muscle and nerve disease that ultimately restricted him to a wheelchair for the past 25 years. Despite his handicap he was cheerful and positive and lived life to the fullest. He was a sports enthusiast, and he especially enjoyed the Post 22 games.

Scott is survived by his best friend and brother, Bruce Backens of Rapid City, loving sister Sandra Holleman of Sioux Falls and two nieces Mary Beth Scherr of Cold Springs, MN and Heidi Holleman of Sioux Falls. Other survivors include his uncles Vern (Carol) Backens of Spearfish and Don Backens (Imogene) of Rohnnert Park, CA and aunts Emma Fry of Rapid City, Millie Rehnke (Gene) of Eden Prairie, MN, Doris Mansfield (Don) of Crown Point, IN, Thelma Edlund of Lead and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two uncles.

Scott was a man of faith and was a member of Trinity and Bethlehem Lutheran Churches in Rapid City. He was a member of the YMCA and actively participated in the programs there until the time of his death.

Two of the high-points of his year was participating in the Ski for Light events held at Deer Mountain each winter and Meeting the Need which provides a camping experience for the handicapped. He also served on the Mayor's Committee for the Handicapped.

Scott will be sadly missed by his family and many close personal friends including Dr. Sabow, who have been wonderfully supportive over the last many years. He will also be missed by his church, family and those who knew him only by his friendly smile, wave, or cheerful greeting.

A visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday with the family present until 4 p.m. at the Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City with Pastors Wilbur Holz and Bill Paepke officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
