Bohdan Paczyński was a Polish astrophysicist and astronomer who made important discoveries in various fields of astrophysics, such as stellar evolution, gravitational lensing, variable stars, gamma ray bursts, galactic structure and accretion processes.

Bohdan Paczyński published his first scientific paper at the age of 18, by the time he was 24 he earned his Ph.D., which took him two years to complete. When he was 36 he became the youngest member of Polish Academy of Science. At the age of 39, in 1979, he became a professor (scientific title in Poland).

In 1981 Bohdan Paczyński moved to the US, where he worked at Princeton University as Lyman Spitzer Jr. Professor of Astrophysics for the rest of his life. His works on gravitational lensing, especially gravitational microlensing, which he proposed to use as means of search for dark (hard to be seen from Earth) cosmic objects such as black and brown dwarfs, extrasolar planets or black holes, were among his most important contributions to modern astrophysics and spawned very fruitful projects that last to this day, such as OGLE and ASAS.

Awards given to Bohdan Paczyński include:
-Eddington Medal (1987)
-Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1999)
-Henry Draper Medal of the National Academy of Sciences (1997)
-Heineman Prize (1992)
-Bruce Medal (2002)
-Marian Smoluchowski Medal of the Polish Physical Society (2000)
-Bruno Rossi Prize (2000)
-Henry Norris Russell Lectureship (2006)
-Karl Schwarzschild Medal of Astronomische Gesellschaft (1981)
-Commander's Cross with Star of The Order of Polonia Restituta (2007, posthumously)

In addition to being a great scientist Bohdan Paczyński was also an outstanding teacher who fascinated many young scientists who wanted to follow in his footsteps. Always positive, energetic, open-minded and friendly, he will be remembered and missed by many.

Bohdan Paczyński died in Princeton, NJ, at the age of 67. He was buried in Poland, at Cmentarz Leśny w Laskach (Forest Cemetery in Laski), near the Polish capital city of Warsaw.
