Stanley served as a Staff Sergeant and Top Turret Gunner on B-24D "Jack Pot" (#42-40280), 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cumberland County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 27, 1940, prior to the war, in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Stanley was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 collided with another B-24, while attempting to land, after an aborted bombing mission to Rabaul. The entire crew was killed in an explosion due to their full bomb load upon impact. The other B-24, badly damaged, managed to land.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
