Lewis Riley Wilson was born on 9 July 1854 near Broughton, Hamilton County, Illinois to Samuel Philiman and Elizabeth "Betty" (Douglass) Wilson. He was the 12th of their 14 children.
In 1860, he was enumerated as an Illinois born five-year-old white male living with his parents, three sisters and five brothers. He had attended school in the previous year.
The year 1863 was a difficult one for the Wilson family. First, his older brother John died in July. Then his beloved father died on 18 November and just one week later his sister Rhoda also died. Their mother was left with five children under the age of 18.
Sometime after 1865, Lewis' mother remarried to John E. Gort. Lewis was not living with them in 1870 but an older sister and the youngest brother was.
Lewis, three of his brothers and his mother moved to Kingman County, Kansas in 1875 where Betty (Douglass) Wilson passed away on 18 December of that year.
On 22 October 1877, Lewis married Livona Tarrant, the daughter of Asa B. and Mary Ann (Robertson) Tarrant. Livona was originally from White County, Illinois and the families may have known each other prior to moving to Kansas. Lewis and Livona would have ten children; one of whom died at the age of 13 months.
Lewis, Livona and the children still at home moved to Kiowa County, Kansas between 1902 and 1905. Lewis died on his farm there on 16 March 1911.
