Major League Baseball Player. He was a solid defensive outfielder with a strong throwing arm and was a member of the American League All-Star team in 1938. He played in five games for the Chicago Cubs in 1931 and didn't return to the big leagues until 1935, when he was in six games for the Chicago White Sox. The following year, though, the 5-foot-7 1/2, 168-pound right-handed hitter batted .307 with 32 doubles and 99 runs scored. He had another fine season for the White Sox in 1937, hitting .302 with 29 doubles, a league-leading 16 triples and a career-high 12 homers. He tied a major-league record with four doubles in a game on September 4 of that year. Kreevich batted .297 in 1938 and was the leadoff man and went 0 for 2 for the AL All-Stars in a 4-1 victory at Cincinnati's Crosley Field. In 1939, he hit .323 with 30 doubles and career highs in RBIs with 77 and stolen bases with 23. He also led AL center fielders with 18 assists. The White Sox traded him with pitcher Jack Hallett on December 9, 1941 to the Philadelphia Athletics for outfielder Wally Moses. He played for the A's in 1942 and went to the St. Louis Browns in 1943. He batted .301 in 105 games in 1944 as the Browns, managed by Luke Sewell, won their only AL pennant by one game over the New York Yankees. In the all-Sportsman's Park World Series against the Cardinals, who actually were the Browns' tenants, he hit .231 (6 for 26) with three doubles. The heavily favored Redbirds won in six games. He was sold to Washington on August 8, 1945 and finished his career with the Senators that year. His lifetime totals were .283 with 221 doubles, 75 triples, 45 homers, 514 RBIs and 115 stolen bases. (bio by: Ron Coons)
