Rites Held Sunday For Long-Time Resident Of This Vicinity

Mrs. Otto Popken, a resident of northwest Plymouth County for many years, passed away on Wednesday morning, February 28, 1951, at the Hawarden Hospital, after an illness of one and one-half years of luekemia, at the age of 59 years.

Emma Amalia Schwarting was born May 10, 1891, at Golzwarden, Oldenburg, Germany, and came to the United States in her youth. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran, faith, being a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Hawarden. She was united in marriage with Otto J. F. Popken in Le Mars, Iowa, April 4, 1913. They farmed in Akron vicinity for thirty-four years, retiring three years ago and purchasing a home in Hawarden.

Mrs. Popken was a splendid homemaker, a kind and devoted wife and mother, a helpful neighbor and highly esteemed by many friends for her excellent qualities. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Left to mourn her departure, besides the husband, Otto, are one son William Popken, of Akron; three daughters, Mrs. Alvin Sommervold, of Alcester, S. D.; Mrs. Roland Rohlfs, of Akron, and Mrs. Gordon Swanson, of Sioux City; four grandchildren; two sisters, of Chicago, and one brother, of Buffalo, New York, besides a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and one brother.

Funeral services, which were to be held Saturday afternoon, were postponed, due to the road and weather conditions, and were held Sunday afternoon, at 1:30 from the Barnard funeral home and at 2:00 o'clock at Trinity Lutheran church in Hawarden, Rev. Sieving officiating. Pallbearers were W. L. Ruttan, Ed Jepson, Fred Vemon, Wm. Gerrietts, Frank McElhaney and Orin Harris. Interment was in Riverside cemetery, Akron.
