"Alice Patricia Oliver died unexpectedly on December 12, 2014 in Houston, TX at the age of 76.

Alice is survived by her children, Anne-Marie Funk (husband, Matthew Secrest) of Norman, Oklahoma, Marga Lisa O'Donnell (husband John) of Tomball, Texas and Paul Andrew Funk (partner, Karen Clifton) of Camino, California; sister, Dorothy Sousa (husband Ernest) of Arcata, California; and several grandchildren: Ryan John O'Donnell of Arlington, Texas, Jasmine Perri Funk of Cameron Park, California, Kyle Charles O'Donnell and Michael Andrew O'Donnell of Tomball, Texas and Andrew and Megan Clifton of Camino, California. She is preceded in death by her brother James Coleman of Oregon, and her mother, Ida Coleman and stepfather, Frank Coleman, of Arcata, California.

Alice was born on March 10, 1938 in Eureka, California to Ida Rogers Oliver, her father having died of appendicitis three months prior to her birth. She graduated from Arcata Union High School in 1956 and Humboldt State College in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.

She married Milton John Funk in 1960 (divorced 1971). Alice had a 36-year career as an elementary school teacher and touched the lives of many students. She is remembered for being a firm disciplinarian who made classes sing every day. Alice's first position was teaching fourth grade at Peninsula Union School in Samoa, California. After moving to Camino, California with her family in 1966 she taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades at Camino Union Elementary School until she retired in 2001. She was a gifted teacher who was especially capable of teaching children to read and to love reading. She always said that she was a great math teacher because she had taken a college math teaching course several times until she passed it. She instilled the principle in her students that failure doesn't mean you stop, it just means you have more knowledge to go after the goal next time.

Her family and friends remember her as a very kind and patient woman who gave generously of her small treasure and abundant heart. She encouraged everyone to become their best selves and had absolutely no doubt that her friends and family could achieve any dream or goal any of them pursued. She was their quiet cheer leader.

Alice was accomplished at jewelry making, sewing and drawing. She loved the Pacific Coast in Northern, California and the Sierra Mountains, near Camino, California and Lake Tahoe, Nevada—the area in which she spent the majority of her working life. She loved long weekend drives and she loved picnics with her children, grandchildren and friends. She was a generous woman who loved education and who was passionate about teaching children to read early—before they entered school whenever possible. In recent years she volunteered weekly at Helping Hands, a craft workshop of the Northwest Assistance Ministries, making quilts and crafts to raise funds to support the non-profits' many aims.

A celebration of life ceremony will be planned in the spring when her family and friends can gather in California. Time and date to be determined. The family has set up a remembrance website at www.facebook.com/RememberingAliceOliver. All are welcome to post condolences, comments, stories and photos. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Northwest Assistance Ministries, 15555 Kuykendahl, Houston, TX 77090."
