John Grubb, the first son of William and Mary (McBride) Grubb, was a Loudoun County stonemason who supported the Union during the Civil War. He married Elizabeth Jackson in 1816 and they had at least five children.

During the War of 1812, he was an ordinance sergeant in the Virginia militia. In the 1840's, John served in the Virginia Legislature. After he retired, he became a teacher in Lovettsville where he voted against secession in 1861. After the war he was elected to the Loudoun County Council.
