A two time college All-American graduate of Notre Dame University, he went on to a successful National Football League career playing for the Chicago Cardinals from 1948 to 1953 and playing on the Detroit Lions championship teams of 1953 and 1954. In 1942 the defensive lineman won the Knute Rockne Award given to the nation's best college lineman. He was selected to play in the NFL's first All Pro game in 1951. After his playing days he became an assistant coach for the University of Detroit, before joining the coaching staffs of the Detroit Lions, and Buffalo Bills. For seven seasons he was the head coach for Hiram College, before returning to his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio to become an assistant at Youngstown State University. He served on the Penguins staff for twenty-three years. In 2000 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
