United States Naval Officer. A Lieutenant in the United States Navy, on April 19, 1917, while a gunner's mate aboard the troop transport “USS Mongolia”, he was credited with sinking a German submarine in the English Channel, seven miles southeast of Beachy Head. The sinking was the first official hostile action against Germany after the U.S. entered the World War I. (bio by: Michael Vance Baker)
