Melbourne moved to Hollywood in 1917 and worked with photographer Fred Hartsook and while shooting photos of Mary Pickford, she was so impressed with his work that she helped him start a career as a Hollywood photographer. During the 1920's he shot photos of several big name stars including: Mary Pickford, Norma Talmadge, Alla Nazimova, Pauline Frederick, Norma Shearer, June Marlowe, Bryant Washburn, Vilma Banky, Pola Negri, Buster Keaton, Fanny Brice, Jacqueline Logan, Marion Davies, Betty Compson, John Barrymore, Alice Terry, William DeMille, Hobart Bosworth, Douglas Fairbanks and many more. Following the 1920s, Spurr turned to photographing authors, dancers and a few U.S. Presidents. Spurr wanted to act in films but due to the fact that he was nearly deaf, directors found it difficult to work with him.
