| Birth: | Nov. 4, 1830 Carlisle Cumberland County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | Aug. 30, 1862 Manassas Park City Virginia, USA |  The son of Raphael Cummings & Matilda Radcliffe (Rhinebeck) Smead, he attended Dickinson College before entering West Point, graduating in the class of 1854. He served the army during the Gila Expedition against the Apaches and later as an instructor at West Point, and in 1860 was stationed in Washington during a coastal survey assignment. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he served three months as captain of the 1st DC Infantry (apparently commanding the unit). Then he returned to Harrisburg and recruited a company that was assigned to the 2nd U.S. Artillery. but the army instead commissioned captain in the 5th U.S. Artillery. He was killed in action at the second battle of Bull Run when a round of solid shot struck him in the head.
