Helen Reed Betz, age 88, died at 4:40 pm Sunday, Dec 28, 1941 at her home at 119 Fourth Ave. She was one of the city's oldest lady residents.
Helen was born in Gallia county on Nov. 27, 1853, the daughter of Charles Reed and Margaret Kincaid, and she lived her entire life there in the area. On Nov 25, 1878 in Gallia County, Helen Reed was married briefly to Benjamin F Rife, and he is the father of her son Harland Worthy Rife, born April 1878. She was marriage second to Col. David Betz on Mar 18, 1886, a second wife for him, his first wife being Lucretia V Patten who died in 1885. Col. David Betz died on October 11, 1917.
Helen Reed and Col. Betz were the parents of Daisy Mae, Nora Alice, Charles Cadiz, Lyda and Cario "Carrie" Neal.
Helen Betz was interred in Mound Hill Cemetery.

Helen's firstborn son, Harland Worthy Rife, was born April 1878. Harland married first to Orinda "Rinda" Baker in 1902, daughter of Joseph Walter Baker and Isabelle Hively. They were the parents of five sons and one daughter; Nathan, Vern, Fred, Harley, William and Dorothy May. Harland and Rinda divorced and Harland married second to Sarah F Hill in 1921.
