Excerpt from "Wild Key West", chapter 25, Conch Sketches:

Benjamin Franklin "Wiggy" Roberts

Benjamin Franklin Roberts was born in Key West on February 17, 1872, and like many conchs he had a nickname. He was known around town as Wiggy.

His mother was Sarah Pinder, born in Cherokee Sound on June 8, 1851 who immigrated to Key West with her widowed mother Elizabeth Sands Pinder sometime before 1870. She was found living in the home of her mother and step father Henry Baker in 1870. Her occupation was seamstress. She married Benjamin Roberts of Key West on December 20, 1870, the same year her mother was married to Henry Baker. Benjamin Roberts, Sr. died between 1875-1880 and Sarah Pinder Roberts married Joseph Frederick Sands on April 2, 1882 and had three children with him.

Wiggy was married to Eoline Agnes Beccaise on June 10, 1899 and they had five children although only two lived beyond childhood. Eoline died in 1906, two weeks after the birth of her last child. Eoline's parents were Charles Beccaise of Charleston, South Carolina and Lefronia Ann Sweeting of Harbour Island, Eleuthera. Mr. Beccaise was a dray driver and liveryman.

Wiggy was a cigar maker for over 20 years. He met Ruth Lowe who immigrated from Green Turtle Cay to Key West in 1905. She also worked in the cigar factory as a shipper and picker. Upon arrival to Key West, and for a short time after she lived with her cousin Mary Effie Curry Averette at 1030 Eaton Street.

Benjamin and Ruth Lowe married on October 29, 1910. They had two sons of their own and lived at 809 Sawyer Lane during their marriage. This was the family homestead. By 1930 Benjamin had become a fisherman. He caught many tarpon and other fish as you can see. Benjamin is pictured in the middle with his wife Ruth and his son Edward Franklin "KK" Roberts on his left.

He died in Key West on April 21, 1936 of diabetes as his mother before him, and a chronic heart condition. Services were held at the Pritchard Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Shuler Peele of the Fleming Street Methodist church officiating.
