Born in Wadhams Mills, NY, the only son of the Rev. Charles Spooner to reach adulthood. His 5 sisters never married, and as adults became china painters. Joseph arranged for the shipment of their supplies and merchandise. He married Mary Louisa Powers in 1879, daughter of Grand Rapids magnate William Thompson Powers, at the home of her father on Cherry & Pine Streets. They had 4 children - Charles Willett, Harold Laurence, William T.P., and Louisa Carlotta. He lived and worked in Grand Rapids his whole life.
