Donnel Gene Merrell, 76, of Lima died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family, April 13, 2006.
Don was born in Lima on Oct. 30, 1929, to Max and Bonnie Merrell. He grew up in Lima and lived within the same two blocks his entire life. He married his high school sweetheart, Lois Martinell, and they had three children together, Donna, Paul and Gladys. They enjoyed 57 years of married life.
Don worked for the state of Montana as a road maintenance man for 35 years and retired at the age of 55. He helped organize the Lima Fire Department and Lima Swimming Pool and was an active member of the Evergreen Lodge in Lima until it was consolidated with the Dillon Lodge. He was worthy patron 20 years in the Elva Boardman Chapter and enjoyed many years as a Boy Scout leader. One of his greatest accomplishments was the discovery of mammoth bones by the Lima Reservoir. This location is now known as the Merrell Dig.
Don was preceded in death by his father, and two grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; mother, Bonnie Merrell of Lima; children, Donna (Rich) Lukesh of Boise, Paul (Sheila) Merrell of Saratoga, Calif., and Gladys Merrell of Idaho Falls, Idaho; grandchildren, Patrick, Anne, Rob, Tim, Brent, Melanie; brother, Dee (Norma) Merrell of Lima; sisters, Carol (Gordon) Harball of Whitehall, Edith Reed of Pocatello, Anita (Baxter) Brown of Dillon, Joyce Merrell of Missoula, Lila (Jim) Harper of Missoula; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday in Brundage Funeral Home, Dillon, with funeral services in the Community Church in Lima at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Memorials: Lima Fire Department, Lima Swimming Pool, or Barrett Home Health and Hospice.
