Joe Don was born in Tuxedo, Texas, to the late Joe Prosper and Marguerite Appling Rhodes. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from East Texas State University in Commerce and served a 20 year career in the U. S. Navy, before teaching AutoCAD for 20 years at Howard College in Big Spring. He married Anna Clements on October 5, 1956, in Ira, Texas, and they shared over 58 years together.
After retiring, they moved to Teague in 1998 and he became an active volunteer in the community. Joe spent many hours with Meals on Wheels and at the Lord’s Community Storehouse. Joe was a faithful Christian and was ordained as a Deacon in the early 1960’s at First Baptist Church in Lexington Park, Maryland. He served as a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Teague as well as teaching Sunday school and serving as treasurer for 13 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Joe Rhodes; his stepmother, Leota Rhodes; and a step-sister, Lou Ann Belcher.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Rhodes; daughter, Carrie Thomas and husband, Earl, all of Teague; son, Rick Rhodes and wife, Karen, of Fort Worth; grandchildren: Bryan Thomas and wife, Ashley, of Lumberton, Ragen Thomas, of Teague, Nathan Hodges, Sarah Hodges, Hannah Hodges, and Rebecca Hodges, all of Fort Worth; four great-grandchildren; sister, Bess Lamb, of Colorado City, TX; brother, Dwaine Norris, of Holly Ranch, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
