He married 2nd, 1772 at German ("Peaceable") Fayette Co. (then Cumberland Co.), Penna. to Mary WOODFIELD/WOODFILL, dau. of Joseph WOODFILL of Wales. Her father is said to have been converted to Methodism by John Wesley himself.
By this 2nd marriage James had four more childen:
5. Robert BRENTON (1772-1840) m. Sarah SPILMAN
6. Mary BRENTON (1773-1852) m. James McCLAIN;
7. Nancy BRENTON (1777-1822) m. Thomas SPILMAN;
8. Henry BRENTON (1779-1846) m. Esther BAIRD.

All six of his sons became Methodist Ministers.

On 28 September 1773, Robert DENBOW of Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, sold to Michael CRESAP a tract of land in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania "adjoining the Lands of David ROGERS and Joseph BRENTON on the Monongahaly being part of a Larger tract of Land I purchased of James BRENTON and containing by estimation two hundred and fifty acres ---". On 5 September 1775, James BRENTON of the Monongahela Settlement, Augusta County, Virginia deeded to Michael CRESAP, Senr. "a Certain Tract or Parcel of Land lying about one Mile distant from Monongahela River and Bounded by the following persons: John ADAMS on the North East, Edward DORSEY on the East, Thomas BROWN on the West, and Edward WHITE on the North ---". Witnesses to the deed were Robert DENBOW and John Jeremiah JACOBS.

John and Robert BRENTON, sons of Henry BRENTON, moved with their father to Barron Co., Kentucky. Robert BRENTON served one month under Captain Peter STURGIS and Colonel George Rogers CLARK, went on an expedition to Piqua, Ohio, and was in a battle at that place with the Indians. - See Pension File #S.16062. James BRENTON, while a resident of Virginia, enlisted and served as a private from August or September 1780, under Captain Peter A STURGUS and Colonel George Rogers CLARK, and was in an engagement with the Shawnee Indians at Piqua; In 1781, he served as a private under Captain John COWAN, Captain Ambrose GORDON, and under Captain ELLISON.

James BRENTON (1741-1782) was killed in August 1782 at the Battle of Blue Lick. His will was probated in 1783 at Shelbyville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. The men involved in the appraisal of his estate lived near Shelbyville, Kentucky.

His widow, Mary (Woodfield) Brenton, raised their sons to become Methodist ministers, and she is said to be the "Mother of Methodism" in Kentucky and Indiana. Her two daughters also married Methodist ministers.
