Finley was assigned to Company D, 38th Wisconsin Infantry. He died of pneumonia at the Camden General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

He is buried in what was originally called M-846 "Soldiers Rest" before the government purchased the land for the National cemetery in the 1860s.
