Major Idabelle (Sparky) Crouch of Erie, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at home. She was born in Utica, N.Y. on October 16, 1917, daughter of the late Albert L. and Mary Alice Butterfield Wheeler. She attended Utica Schools, took courses at Buffalo University, Asbury Theological Seminary, Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, Baptist Theological Seminary in Portland, Maine, and the Salvation Army College in New York City. She was commissioned as an Officer (Minister) by General Evangline Booth with the Dauntless Evangelist Session in 1939. With her husband, Major Walter W. Crouch, they served most of their years as Corps Officers (Ministers) in Western Pa., two appointments in Ohio, Dayton and Findley. In 1976 they were transferred to the Adult Rehabilitation Center in Portland, Maine where they served eight years. They retired in August 1983 and moved to Erie, Pa. Surviving are her husband of 64 years, whom she married in Meadville, Pa. on July 4, 1941; two sons, Walter W. Crouch, Jr. of Chicago, Ill. and Paul D Crouch and wife Jane of Warren, Pa.; two grandsons, Nathan and Matthew Crouch of Warren, Pa.; one granddaughter, Jennifer M. Crouch of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two great-granddaughters, Shawnell and Tavie of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one brother, Thomas F. Wheeler and wife Beth of Wilmington, Del.; one sister-in-law, Mary E. Wheeler of Utica, N.Y. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and friends. Idabelle was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles R. Wheeler and James A. Wheeler and wife Vivian; two sisters, Edna M. Lanning and husband James and Lillian M. Alexander and husband Herman (Bud); and one grandson, Aaron Thomas Crouch.
