William Sheppard, Sr.

William Lee Sheppard, the son of Gale and Eva Sheppard, was born on Oct. 22, l908, in Mendota, Missouri. Sheppard grew up in the states of Missouri and Ohio because his stepfather was in the service at Camp Sherman. He finished school in Pleasantville, where he met Tillie De Koning his Wife to be, whose father, Joe De Koning, had set up a shoe repair shop in Pleasantville. They were united in marriage on July 23, 1926, at Moulton and to this union four children were born [sic] Geneva Joan, John William, Mary Louise and William Lee, Jr. He and Tillie moved to Pella, where they raised their family. He worked on the railroad, for the Pella Canning Factory and at the Rolscreen Company while Tillie was employed at the Overall Factory for 45 years. For 17 years, Sheppard worked on the assembly line at the Maytag Company in Newton. Following his retirement in 1965, he and Tillie enjoyed gardening and fishing together. They enjoyed many fishing trips to Lake Okoboji at Spirit Lake. He and Tillie were married for 64 years when Tillie passed away November 5, 1990, following recent abdominal surgery. Sheppard mourned her death intensely. He continued living in their residence, 414 West 4th Street in Pella until becoming a resident at Hilltop Manor South. He then became a patient in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center. He passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center last Friday at the age of 95 years, 8 months and l7 days. He is survived by three children and their spouses; l3 grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren and several great-great-great-grandchildren. They and their families are Geneva J. (Marinus Aalbers) of Ottumwa; (John Wm. Sheppard) Patricia and Kenneth DeWitt of Oskaloosa; Mary Lou and Donald Buyert of Pella; and William L. and Peggy Sheppard. Jr. of Urbandale.

Sheppard was preceded in death by his wife, Tillie; his son, John Wm. Sheppard. who died at the age of 24 years on January 24, 1954. his son-in-law, Marinus Aalbers who passed away on July 22, 1990; and a great-granddaughter Christine Cowles, who died March 24, 1987. He was the last surviving member of his original family and was preceded in death by his parents, Gale and Eva Sheppard and his sister, Mary Louise. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pella. He enjoyed playing baseball and umpired many a "kitten ball" games.

Memorials may be designated for the First Baptist Church of Pella.
