Seattle Mayor. He served as mayor of Seattle, Washington from August 3, 1884 to August 3, 1885. He was born in New Brunswick, Canada and lived briefly in Maine before settling in the Pacific Northwest. He arrived in Seattle in 1869 and was admitted to the Washington state bar in 1871. He was a highly successful and prominent businessman with investment holdings in banking, railroading, newspaper publishing, real estate development, logging and coal mining enterprises. In addition to serving as mayor, he served three terms as a member of the Seattle City Council. In 1892 he ran again for mayor, losing to James T. Ronald, a future district court judge. Later in the year he married Eliza P. Ferry, daughter of Washington's first elected governor Elisha P. Ferry. At the time of his death he held an estimated fortune in excess of two million dollars.  (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
