The right-hander pitched 19 years in the big leagues with the Detroit Tigers (1922 to 1925), the St. Louis Cardinals (1926 to 1933), the Cincinnati Reds (1934) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1934 to 1940). He posted a 12-7 record with a 3.98 earned run average in 1923. His winningest season was 1929, when he was 13-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 12 complete games in 19 starts. He was on pennant-winning teams in 1928, 1930 and 1931, but got only start in the World Series. That came in Game 4 in 1931, when he went 5 2/3 innings in a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics. The Redbirds won the title in seven. He was traded to Cincinnati with catcher Bob O'Farrell, who would become the Reds' manager, on January 11, 1934 for pitcher Glenn Spencer. The Reds shipped him along with outfielder Johnny Moore to the Phillies on May 16 of that year for outfielders Art Ruble and Wes Schulmerich and pitcher Ted Kleinhaus. He struck out Babe Ruth twice on May 29, 1935, thus becoming the last pitcher to strike out the Bambino in a major-league game. His lifetime totals were 112-117, a 4.06 ERA and 82 complete games in 209 starts.
