Matilda Ann “Toots” Payne, age 78, of Flora, Illinois passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at Flora Gardens Care Center in Flora.

Matilda was born at home in Sailor Springs, Illinois on April 13, 1936 to Pearl and Florence (Anderson) Payne.

During her working years, she worked at the Olney Garment Factory, Four Sisters Manufacturing, and Sparton Manufacturing. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church where she also assisted with Vacation Bible School, and had been a member of Rebekahs.

Matilda had a love of family and has decorated many wedding, anniversary, and birthday cakes over the years. She was her own handyman, enjoyed sewing and crocheting, and shared her homemade jellies and jams with everyone.

She is survived by a sister: Lois Eastin (the late Kenneth) of Flora, a brother: Delbert (Norma) Payne of Sailor Springs, a brother: James Payne (the late Kathy) of California, a sister: Elaine Anderson (the late Harold) of Marseilles, an aunt: Mabel Harmon (the late Ken) of Sailor Springs, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Henry Payne, Geneva and husband Vernon Frank, and Ethel and husband Everett Jennings.

A funeral service for Matilda Payne will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014 at First Southern Baptist Church in Flora with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Interment will be in Dillman Cemetery, Sailor Springs.

Memorial donations may be given to Clay County Hospice. Frank & Bright Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
