Mrs. Mary A. Sproul died suddenly at her residence near Fort Scott after an illness of 22 days. Mrs. Sproul was born in Ohio and came West with her husband shortly after their marriage. She leaves her husband and six children to mourn her loss. Three daughters preceded her in death. She was a kind and dutiful wife and a loving and affectionate mother. A large concourse of friends followed her remains to the grave.

Notes: Mary Annie Milligan married James Porter Sproul on February 2, 1860 in Hebron, Ohio and moved to Durant, Iowa. James enlisted the Army during the Civil War. After the war, the family moved to Kansas, where Mary died in 1882. James then moved his family to California, where he made his home with his son, William and his wife, in Azusa, California.

Mary and James were the parents of nine children, Ida Bell, William Asbury, James Sherman, Cora May, Etta Caroline, Celia Alice, Andrew Frederick, Clara Myrtle and Beverly Edgar (male) Sproul.

Ida Bell Sproul died at age 3, and is the only one buried in Iowa, in the Durant Cemetery. Both Etta Caroline and Clara Myrtle died at age 3, and are buried in Kansas with Mary.

James Sproul was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Colma, California.
