Graveside services will be held for Joseph B. Ely, 94, of Chico 11:00 a.m. Saturday April 8th at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. He died Monday March 20, 2006 in Chico. Joe was born May 22, 1911 in Chicago, Illinois to Charlotte and Joseph Ely.

He graduated from Dartmouth College and Yale Forestry School. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 36 years and subsequently taught at Cal State University, Chico. He developed and operated the first squad of aerial fire control tankers in Willows, CA in 1956, and his achievements are recorded in the aeronautical portion of the Smithsonian Institute. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters.

Joe is survived by 2 daughters, Charlotte Britton Anderson of El Cerrito, CA and Brenda A. Albus of Sarasota, Florida; 2 sons, Franklin J. Ely of Etna, CA and Guerdon T. Ely of Chico; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His wife, Katherine, predeceased him in 1997.
