PORTLAND -- Roland William Bracy Sr., 88, died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Mercy Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1919, in Portland, the son of Ervin Grant and Margaret M. Williams Bracy. Mr. Bracy graduated from the Maine School for the Deaf in Portland. He was the first deaf man in Maine to work as an upholster which he did for many years. He worked for Lancaster Upholstery, State Upholstery, Perrin Upholstery, Art Upholstery and Watts Furniture Restoration Upholstery.
He was a member of the Greater Portland Deaf Club, Maine Deaf Senior Citizens, Maine Alumni of the Deaf, Southern Maine Senior Citizens, Maine Association of the Deaf, and Woodford's Congregational Church. He enjoyed Maine sports including the Portland Pirates and Sea Dogs.
Mr. Bracy was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Lelia Greenlaw Bracy. He is survived by four sons, Roland W. Bracy Jr. of Biddeford, Norman E. Bracy of Buxton, Harold C. Bracy of Sebago and Ervin G. Bracy of Cumberland; one daughter, Claudia L. Sabine of Cumberland; one sister, Thelma G. Hickley of Southwest Harbor; 17 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, Natalie and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Thursday, July 5, 2007, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Funeral services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at the Woodford's Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland. Interment will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park.
