Tookie Berry succumbed to a battle with cancer and passed away in his home on Sunday, April 2, 2006. Alvin Lee "Tookie" Berry was born in Odessa, TX on August 18, 1950, the son of R.V. and Katherine Berry.
Tookie graduated from Permian High School in 1969. He was a co-captain on the 1968 State Finalist football team. Tookie moved on to play at Texas Christian University as a 3-year starter, serving 2-years as the defensive captain for the Horned Frogs. He graduated from TCU in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After graduating he returned to Odessa to accept a position as President of the Midland/Odessa Home Builders Association. In 1985 he joined the Broncho Chevrolet staff as Manager of Fleet Truck Sales. Tookie met and married the love of his life, Gena Palmer Berry, in 1993. In 2002, he became President and co-owner of Leek Fire and Safety. During his tenure at Leek Fire and Safety, Tookie continued his involvement in automotive sales by working for the Sewell Auto Group in Crane.
Tookie's greatest expression of Christ's love was the relationships he built in his life as evidenced by the numerous lifelong friends. While always a fierce competitor in sports, his love and compassion for people endeared him to all that knew him.
Tookie was preceded in death by his mother Katherine, father R.V., and brother Dickey Berry.
He is survived by his wife Gena Berry; sons Ryan and Cole Bebee of Austin, TX, and Josh Berry of Lewisville, TX and daughter Ashleigh Berry of Odessa. Also surviving; brothers, Ronnie Berry and wife Londa of Odessa, Mickey Berry and wife Wanda of Lovington, NM, Royce Berry and wife Ann of Houston, and sister Betty Fowler and husband Nicky of Lubbock. Tookie also leaves behind two aunts, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and loving friends.
A special request from Tookie, in lieu of flowers for the funeral, please make a donation to St. John's Episcopal School, PO Box 3046, Odessa, TX 79760.
Pallbearers are: Ricky Digby, Bobby Foster, Dale Harrington, Dan Peoples, Ronnie Peoples, and Tommy Stewart.
Family visitation will be at Frank Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the First United Methodist Church.
