Mrs. Gustaf Jonson Sylvan, 89, died early yesterday morning after a long illness.

The former Lucille Tradewell she was born in Columbia, Aug. 19, 1871, the daughter of the late James D. and Sarah Emma McCain Tradewell.

She was a charter member and honorary life member of the Columbia Garden Club.

Mrs. Sylvan was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Her husband, who died in 1958, was a co-founder of Sylvan Brothers jewelry firm and was active in the city's civic life for many years.

Her late husband came from Sweden, and lived first in Savannah, Ga., where he and his brothers had a vacation home on Sylvan Island, one of the Sea Island.

He opened a jewelry firm here in 1896. He retired before his death in 1958.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss Frances Sylvan, Columbia; four nieces, Miss Emme B. Felding, Columbia; Mrs. C. A. Taylor, Bradenton, Fla.; Mrs. H. Guy Nickerson, Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Frances Brady, Chapel Hill, N. C.

Funeral services will be held at noon today from Dunbar Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John Q. Beckwith. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are Rudolph Gudmundson, S. L. Latimer Jr., S. C. McMeekin, Robert H. Lucas, Thomas Crouch, C. Wilmot Brown and Dr. Chapman Milling.
