Hugh Herbert Dockery was born in Tennessee on March 15, 1891 to Ambrose Burnside and Mary (Wilson) Dockery. He was the grandson of Issac and Charlotte (Lottie) Dockery of Sevier County, Tennessee.

Hugh Herbert Dockery and Liller (Lila) Snapp were married on September 16, 1911 in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Hugh's family lived in Newport, Tennessee and Liller's family moved from Newport to Dandridge approximately 1900. It can only be assumed that they may have known each other growing up. Liller was a homemaker and Hugh was a brick mason, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

After marriage, they resided in Dandridge, Tennessee and had five children (another child appears to have died in child birth). The children are listed below:

William Burnette Dockery
Carl Snapp Dockery
Anna (Annie) Sue Dockery
Thomas (Tommie) Dockery
Mary Emma Dockery

Liller died in 1938.

Around 1939, Hugh married Maggie Faines. They appear in the 1940 census as living in her home town of Norlina, North Carolina. There is no record or knowledge of any children born from this union.

Very little is known of their life. At one time, Hugh went to La Grange, Illinois and lived and worked with his son, Carl. At some point, Hugh and Maggie Dockery moved to Portsmouth, Virginia. Hugh continued to work as a self-employed brick mason until his failing health.

Hugh Herbert Dockery died in Portsmouth, Virginia at his home on February 13, 1961 at the age of 51. He was buried at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Portsmouth, Virginia. Rogers Funeral Home handled all arrangements.
