"Marsena Lyman Amsberry, son of William and Harriet Amsberry, was born November 12th, 1864 at Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa and departed this life on November 22nd, 1946 at the Broken Bow Hospital of a heart ailment at the age of 82 years and 10 days.
In the fall of 1878 he moved with his parents to Grand Island , Nebraska where they resided until the spring of 1879, when they moved to Custer County, locating near Mason City. He was truly a pioneer passing through the early roughness and hardships which mellowed his character into a man of kindly deeds. His was a quiet and unassuming nature which endeared him to those who knew him. His neighbors and friends valued him for his honesty and integrity. He has left us the memory of a loyal, upright citizen.
He was baptized into the Baptist Faith when a young man. On October 3rd, 1888, he was united in marriage to Emma Cacklin of Mason City, Nebraska. To this union, eight children were born. Two daughters, Dora Ann and Emma Marie and one son, Sgt. Ora B. who died in France during World War I, preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Emma, five children; Mabel Miche, Rollie, LaVern, Viola and Ethel, all of Ansley; one brother, Boyd of Anacortes, Washington; one sister, Kitty Whitaker of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; six grandchildren and a host of friends.
The funeral was held from the Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, with Rev. Alice Elison in charge, assisted by Rev. Burgess. "Rock of Ages", "Beautiful Isle" and "Sweet Bye and Bye" were sung by Mrs. Gard and Mrs. Florence Cox with Mrs. Mattley at the piano.
The pallbearers were John Hall, O. Hookstra, Fred Graf, Curtis McCollister, Andrew Backes, Jim Petrick of Ansley, Roy Banning of Mason City and Louis Purington of Broken Bow.
Out-of-town relatives and friends in attendance were Mrs. Amy Foote and Chester of Dunning, Mrs. Ada Watson of York, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rumery, Mrs. Mary Kelley, Mrs. Rosa Mortensen, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lowry of Mason City, Mrs. Tom Price and Lucille, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hipsley and Louis Purington of Broken Bow and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schaad of Merna."
