| Birth: | Jun. 28, 1557 | | Death: | Oct. 19, 1595 | English nobility. Saint. He was the thirteenth Earl of Arundel. His father Thomas, IV Duke of Norfolk, was beheaded by Queen Elizabeth in 1572 for involvement in the affair of Mary, Queen of Scots. Philip, baptised by the Archbishop of York in the Chapel of Whitehall Palace, had Philip of Spain as one of his godfathers. He graduated at Cambridge, married and attended Queen Elizabeth's court. Handsome, high-born, quick-witted, he neglected his wife and God until 1581 when he was present at a disputation in the Tower of London betweeen a group of Catholic prisoners and others. His soul was awakened and he returned to Arundel to think about reconciliation with the Catholic Church, which he knew meant death. So after reconciliation he tried to seek religious liberty abroad but was betrayed and put in prison. Weakened by malnutrition and not without suspicion of having been poisoned, he died 39 years old after 11 years in the Tower of London. Following his canonization in October 1970, the Parish Church for the Catholics of Arundel was dedicated to him.
