Hilda Baker Miller, 94, a resident of Willow Estates, Penn Laird, and formerly of Goods Mill, passed away on October 28, 2014 at Willow Estates.

Mrs. Miller was born April 29, 1920 and was the youngest child of the late William Russell Baker and Mollie Kyger Baker and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She grew up in the Port Republic area and graduated from Port Republic High school as class salutatorian in 1936.

She was united in marriage on April 29, 1938 on her 18th birthday to Melvin Arey Miller, who preceded her in death on May 8, 2013. They had been married 75 years.

During her life, Hilda enjoyed tending her flower and vegetable gardens, baking, trying out new recipes, sewing, crafts, crocheting, playing Rook and board games; Chinese Checkers specifically. For many years, while Melvin worked away from home during the week, she ran the family farm with the help of her children. She was a member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. She and her husband were supporters of the Church’s building renovations that were designed to accommodate the older members.

Hilda was also preceded in death by four sisters, Violet Pauline Wagoner, Virginia Margaret Hilbert, Minnie Alma Harshberger, Mabel Marie Coakley , one brother, Wilmer Russell Baker, and a daughter, Judith Lee Miller Rodeffer.

She is survived by three sons; Gerald Arey Miller and wife, Betty of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Neil Edward Miller of Harrisonburg; Kevin William Miller and wife Peggie of Yorktown, Virginia; one daughter, Darla Lynne Miller and life companion, Rebecca Tate of McGaheysville, and son-in-law, Charles Rodeffer of Harrisonburg. She is also survived by three granddaughters and one grandson; Sonja Rodeffer Baker, Tamara Elizabeth Miller, Teresa Miller Kirilyuk and Brandon Arey Miller; She also is survived by five great grandsons, nine great granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 11am Saturday morning at the Mill Creek Church of The Brethren with Pastor A. Lee Kinsey. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the church social hall with a luncheon to follow.

There will be no public viewing. The family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren Building Fund.
