Russian Czar. Born Fyodor Alexeiovich Romanov, the eighth child of Alexis I Czar of Russia and Maria Ilianovna Miloslavsakya. He was educated in the traditional subjects but was also tutored in Polish and Latin. Suffering from illness as an infant, he was afflicted with poor health and physical disabilities for the rest of his life. Despite his debility, however, he was at age 15, the eldest surviving son at his father's death and ascended the throne as Czar Fyodor III of Russia. During his reign, in spite of objections from the clergy, he promoted the spread of Polish customs, Roman Catholic religious doctrines, and Latin books among the Russian aristocracy. Military reforms were also undertaken, and the system by which a noble was appointed to a position on the basis of his family's rank in the hierarchy of boyars, was abolished, and merit appointments instituted. He married Agraphia Semyovna Grushetska in July 1680 and produced a son the following year. Both mother and child died within two weeks. Before another year passed, he married a second time, to Marpha Matveyovna Apraxina in 1682. He died at age 20 less than three months later.
