Donald the son of John T. Hartness and Vera L. Hartness of Royal Oak Michigan enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 4 1967 in Detroit. He arrived in Vietnam on October 19 where he was assigned to and served with Company M, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On June 4, the Battalion deployed to the Huong Hoa District of northern Quang Tri Province and began to participate in Operation SCOTLAND II.

During the evening of June 7, the Marines perimeter near the Vietnamese and Laotian border 3 kilometers south of Co Yan (Hill 906) received several rounds of harassing rifle fire. One of the enemy missiles stuck and killed LCpl Donald Hartness.
